Version 4 is supported until June 2025. Version 3 is considered feature complete and will only be receiving bug fixes or small adjustments to existing features. Version 4 will be receiving new feature releases throughout the year based on internal and external demand.

What's the difference between Universal Dashboard and PowerShell Universal?

PowerShell Universal Dashboard was a PowerShell module for developing web-based tools with PowerShell scripts. It was retired on February 14th, 2020. PowerShell Universal is the evolution of the UD module into a full featured platform for building tools with PowerShell. It provides additional features and a web-based admin console for managing the platform. The platform installs as a regular .NET application and can utilize multiple versions of PowerShell in the same installation.

Can I use my Universal Dashboard files in PowerShell Universal?

While much of the PowerShell Universal platform is similar to Universal Dashboard, scripts will not work directly in the platform. Many of the concepts are the same but components and cmdlets have changed significantly since the last release of Universal Dashboard.

How does PowerShell Universal scale? Can I use it to run a public website?

PowerShell Universal heavily relies on PowerShell. Due to the dynamic, uncompiled nature of PowerShell, performance will not be the same as other web-based technologies. Additionally, the performance is extremely dependent on the modules and integrations implemented in the platform. Scripts and APIs are also much less resource intensive than apps. With this in mind, you can take advantage of horizontal scaling with the platform by using a load balancer, git integration and SQL support to allow a higher number of users to access your tools.
We recommend using tools, like Artillery, to load test your environment.

How does licensing work? What's a server?

Each running instance of the PowerShell Universal server will require a license. This is true if you are running multiple instances on one host or instances spread across multiple hosts.
