KB3006 - WPF Item is missing in VS2022

KB3006 - WPF Item is missing in VS2022

Symptom

The option to add a WPF Item (i.e. XAML) to a PowerShell Script Project in Visual Studio 2022 is no longer available.

Cause

At some point in August 2023, Microsoft introduced breaking changes into Visual Studio 2022 around WPF handling. As a result, WPF support has been removed from PowerShell Tools for Visual Studio 2022.

Solution

See Workaround.

Workaround

The only known workaround is to downgrade to Visual Studio 2019 (Enterprise/Professional/Community). WPF is confirmed working as of August 21st, 2023 with version 8.0 of the PowerShell Tools for Visual Studio 2019 extension.

Status

As of August 21st, 2023, Ironman Software has been in contact with Microsoft for assistance around the breaking changes. We apologize for this inconvenience.
